Christian Estrosi

MAYOR OF NICE, PRESIDENT OF THE NICE CÔTE-D’AZUR METROPOLIS AND DEPUTY PRESIDENT OF THE REGION SUD

Christian Estrosi’s political career started in 1983, when he won the election to the municipal council of the city of Nice with responsibility for sports.

In 1985, he was elected District Councilor for the Alpes-Maritimes county. In 1988, he was elected French National Assembly Representative for the 5th district. Further to these nominations, in 1992 he became First Vice-President of the Provence-Alpes-Cote-d’Azur Greater Region. He was re-elected National Assembly Representative in 1993 and again in 1997.

2001 marked his election as District councilor for the town of Saint-Etienne de Tinée, located in the Alpine mountain range, with an overwhelming suffrage (rate of 80%).

On September 18th, 2003, he was elected President of the Provence-Alpes-Cote-d’Azur Greater Region.

On June 2nd, 2005, as a member of the French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin’s national government team, he was appointed Deputy Minister for Regional Planning and Land Development and Management under Nicolas Sarkozy’s administration, then Minister of Interior Affairs.

Further to Nicolas Sarkozy’s presidential election, Christian Estrosi was re-elected National Assembly Representative of the 5th district of the Alpes-Maritimes county. On June 19th, 2007, he was appointed by the French President as State Secretary for Overseas Territories.

On March 18th, 2008, Christian Estrosi announced his resignation as State Secretary, with a strong motivation to fully focus on serving his home city, Nice, and his fellow citizens, the “Niçois”.

On March 21st, 2008, he was elected mayor of the city of Nice. One month later, on April 18th, he became Chairman of the new Nice Côte-d’Azur area, and finally resumed his office of National Assembly Representative on May 26th, 2008.

From June 2009 to November 2010, nominated by Francois Fillon’s Government, he became Minister of Industry. On December 2010, he returned to the National Assembly as Representative for the Alpes-Maritimes county. On January 9th, 2012, he became President of the recently created Nice Côte-d’Azur Metropolitan Area, first ‘Metropolitan administration’ in France.

March 30th, 2014, marked Christian Estrosi’s re-election as mayor of Nice. On April 11th, 2014, he was also re-elected as President of the Nice Côte-d’Azur Metropolitan Area. The same year, he was nominated First Vice-President of the Association of French Urban Communities (ACUF). On December 18th, 2015, he was elected again as President of the Provence Alpes Côte-d’Azur Greater Region.  At the beginning of 2016, he became Second Vice President of the association ‘France Urbaine’.

On May 08th, 2017, Christian Estrosi resigned as President of the Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur Greater Region.  In the aftermath of the Nice terror attack of July 2016, he returned to his office of mayor of Nice on May 15th, 2017, to the service of the whole community.

Nonetheless, as Vice President Delegate of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur Greater Region, Christian Estrosi remained very active in the field of regional governance and integration, more specifically in charge of coordinating regional public affairs administration and policies, promoting culture and also in the area of events management.
